Whilst studying for the EBS MBA, I lucked into a job as a junior trader in exotic derivatives with a global investment bank back in 2003, I had gotten distinctions in Finance, FRM1 and FRM2, but other than that I had no trading/front office banking experience.
Throughout 2007/2008 I was managing numerous trading books, and although these were the most trying times I had seen as a trader, I still managed to make money despite my peers getting blown up in spectacular style.
Earlier this year I was made head of Equity Derivative Sales for the region I'm based in, and I have quite a few staff, and with it a completely different set of problems that I didn't have when I ran a trading book and a team of traders.
I would say a lot of my success, especially during the GFC, came back to what I had learnt on this course and how I applied it. The FRM 1 & 2 courses really helped me understand the fundamentals when I started out and thus allowed me to extend my knowledge to a point where last year I could just switch the models off knowing they weren't designed for the type of markets we were experiencing and allowed me to duck and weave the problems my peers were seeing. The section on hedging and hedge ratios really helped, especially when applied as a function of correlation to another asset. I hedged a short equity correlation portfolio with an interest rate and FX position to cover the macro shocks, which turned out to be a saviour when equity market liquidity dried up. There's one thing to have a hedge in place, but ask yourself how liquid is the hedge, because it can quite easily become your position.
I want to thank EBS for providing me with the tools and knowledge to help me navigate through the minefield that was the last couple of years; I don't think people really grasp how invaluable the teaching methods are on this course. It's one thing to learn something, but it's something completely different to be able to apply what you've learnt!
