When starting the MBA distance learning programme in summer 2000, aged 28 years, I knew it would be a very challenging endeavour. I knew it would mean a lot of homework in addition to my demanding professional career as a project manager living in Germany and later in Austria, and travelling around the world something like 150 days a year. In fact my initial target was to get knowledge and pass 2 to 4 exams in the fields of accounting, finance and economics. The completion of the whole programme was at that time nothing more than a pretty, unrealistic dream.
The two key criteria for the achievement of the EBS MBA programme are: 1. Flexibility (exam locations in Munich and Vienna, free study pace, no need to follow an exam order). And 2. Quality (of the books, content and presentation, and of the program organization).
The books are so interesting that it kept me motivated. The exam preparation was very challenging. Looking back, I estimate the time spent at about 250 hours for each course (if not more including reading on planes!).
The exams are tough, but fair. Fairness is so important. Honestly I experienced the passing of the exams as a psychological challenge too, requiring a certain level of modesty, competitive spirit and sacrifice. It took me over 5 ½ years in total, with maximum 2 exams at each session, and sometimes skipping sessions, at my own pace. The different courses are complementary, which gave me the real feeling to progress, to develop my knowledge each time.
My Graduation with distinction was just amazing and I must say unexpected.
I personally attended the graduation ceremony in July 2006 in Edinburgh with my family and I can really recommend it. Very impressive. A highlight. In combination with a 4-day trip around Edinburgh made me very fond of Scotland ... and whisky distilleries.
