No other MBA program I investigated offered the flexibility of the Heriot Watt distance program. Over the past five years, I have lived in four different countries: Vietnam, USA, Croatia and now Cambodia, serving as Project Manger on irrigation, water supply, drainage and other infrastructure projects. Regular travel has been the one constant over this period. Add to this unreliable access to the internet and one can begin to see that independent study was the only option available to me.

The courses have been challenging, interesting and relevant to me as a manager. For example, in Cambodia, we are pilot testing two private sector financing schemes for design, construction and operation of medium scale water supply projects. The main questions have revolved around contractor risk and return on investment and knowledge of contracting, finance and accounting gained through my course work has come in quite handy in evaluating tariff and lease payments, contractor cash flows and financial returns. In addition to managing the water supply project, I am also serving as Country Director with responsibility for eight other projects in Cambodia. I have had numerous opportunities to 'ground test' the motivational theories described in the organizational behavior course and, of course, project cost planning and control is an important part of my oversight. I regularly use a number of the techniques covered in detail in the project management course.

All in all, my MBA program has been a tremendous horizon expanding experience for me. My only regret is that I was not able to spend time on campus in Edinburgh, a lovely city that I last visited on my honeymoon!
