Having joined the Edinburgh Business School MBA (part-time on campus) programme, with the aim of improving my employment prospects, I left with a clear plan in my mind as to how I was going to start up my own business.

It is difficult to anticipate a life-changing experience prior to its occurrence, or even to identify a particular event as the main catalyst for subsequent changes that occur in your life. But from my perspective, once I had completed registration and got my first ‘Black Box’ at EBS, my instincts told me that if I was able to successfully complete this challenge that I had set for myself, then things would change for me going forward.

I had a very positive experience at Edinburgh Business School, where the mix of students from various nationalities, work experiences and age groups enabled me to feel a part of a larger group very quickly. The breakout sessions and time out from the lectures afforded me the opportunity to share in the wide work and life experiences that existed in our various groups. I was also able to develop relationships with students in my group outside the Business School on both a social and professional basis that I maintain to this day.

The exams, which run for three hours, are often viewed with trepidation prior to entering the designated exam hall, but once you have passed a number of them you begin to anticipate them as your life slowly changes to the realization that you are well on your way to achieving an academic feat that you had some self doubt about initially, and suddenly your confidence starts to grow.

Somewhere in the middle of the programme, I began to appreciate the many different ways of looking at problems and equally found myself looking at opportunities presented to me in a different light, especially after the Finance module.

I went on to establish an outdoor advertising agency in Nigeria, and two years on, the company continues to grow in terms of increasing its client base, turnover and market share. This growth has been very encouraging and has resulted in plans being developed to replicate the model in other countries.

I really am thankful for the experience at Edinburgh Business School, as well as to the teaching and administration team that exists there. I have kept in touch a number of times by requesting assistance and it has always been extended willingly. I also made some good friends during my time there, and often bump into one or two of them mainly in European airports. Once in a while I wear the Heriot-Watt University tie that was bought for me by my wife during graduation, and I cannot help but feel proud of the achievement.
