Colin Garvie is Assistant Professor of accounting and finance at Edinburgh Business School, with responsibility for course development, production and delivery.


He has extensive postgraduate experience teaching accounting and finance for many organisations both in the UK and abroad (Eastern Europe, India and China), including Edinburgh Business School, University of Strathclyde, ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

Colin’s background is commercial. Prior to joining Edinburgh Business School on a full-time basis, Colin held many executive and non-executive directorships in a wide-ranging spread of businesses including software engineering, biotechnology, hotels, food manufacturing, knitwear, retail, hi-tech manufacturing and education.

In addition, Colin operated his own business, Square 1 Consultants, which provided management consultancy, postgraduate training and general business advice to businesses and public sector bodies throughout the UK for over 30 years. He still retains a couple of non-executive posts.

Before running his own business, Colin was employed by the UK's leading venture capitalist, 3i, where his responsibilities included inter alia, the identification, investigation, negotiation and completion of a number of new investments in both start-up and existing companies.
