Edinburgh Business School will use the information you have provided to contact you with information on our products and services. For more information see our terms and conditions.
These exemptions are only ever at our discretion and are considered on the basis of qualifications gained through formal examination - whether at degree level or through a professional body. No consideration is given to life or work experience.
Exemption from core courses may be granted on the basis of bachelor level and professional qualifications. Exemption from core and elective courses may be granted on the basis of postgraduate level qualifications (except fully completed degrees) and professional qualifications.
Exemptions will not be awarded on the basis of courses which have been used towards the award of another degree at Masters level, whether this was awarded by Heriot-Watt University or any other institution.
For example a student who has gained an MSc in Accounting will not be given an exemption in Accounting from Edinburgh Business School’s MBA or MSc degree programmes.
Application for exemption on the basis of prior academic study:
• Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) - Please download the Exemption Application Form and return this to EBS along with a colour (and, if applicable, translated) photocopy of your certificate of award and full academic transcript of results (all of which have been certified as a true copy of the original).
• Postgraduate level study (e.g. Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma) - Please submit the documents outlined above as well as a detailed syllabus document for each of the courses you would like considered.
Application for exemption on the basis of professional qualifications:
We currently award exemptions on the basis of over 30 professional qualifications, a list of which can be found with the Exemption Application Form. The exemption awards listed relate to professional qualifications gained within the last two years and are based on the professional body's own syllabus and examinations. Designation or membership of professional bodies obtained by a different route (e.g. life experience or recognition of prior learning) will not attract the same exemption awards.
Professional qualifications gained within the last two years - Please download and complete the Exemption Application Form, below, and send to Edinburgh Business School along with a colour (and, if applicable, translated) photocopy of your certificate of award and examination results (all of which have been certified as a true copy of the original).
Professional qualifications gained more than two years ago - please submit the documents outlined above as well as a detailed syllabus document for each of the courses studied. Exemption awards will be determined by the syllabus in use at the time examinations were sat and may therefore differ to those on the publicised list. Please ensure therefore that the syllabus information you submit is relevant to the courses at the time you sat the examinations and is not the most current version.
If you hold a professional qualification that is not listed, you may request that it be assessed for eligibility by submitting a certified (and, if applicable, translated) copy of the award certificate, examination results and a detailed syllabus document for each course studied.
Exemption awards made on the basis of professional qualifications are reviewed regularly to ensure they continue to be relevant to the syllabi in current use by Edinburgh Business School. The publicised list will be updated to reflect this; you are advised, therefore, to check our most recent listing of awards before submitting an exemption application.
If you think you qualify for an exemption, please download and complete our exemption form and check out our criteria. Include a full colour copy of your award certificate and transcript with your application.
There is a validation fee of £140 per exemption or credit transfer applied for.
