External sources of funding for UK and international students

The following is a list of available external sources of funding available for UK and International students.

Private funding

Activia Training UK Scholarship (All students)

Activia Training are offering a £1,000 annual scholarship for college and university students in the UK.  The awards are open to both full-time and part-time students.

Anglo-Thai Society (Thai students)

The Education Fund Scheme makes three awards annually in order to provide some financial support for Thai students facing financial difficulty due to the economic crisis.

Australian Bicentennial Scholarships & Fellowships (Australian and UK students)

The Australian Bicentennial Scholarships and Fellowships are one-off awards of up to £4,000 to enable UK postgraduate students or academic staff to undertake a period of research/study in Australia.  The scheme is also open to Australian postgraduate students or academic staff wishing to come to the UK.

Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (Canadian students)

The Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF) provides awards ranging from £2,000 to £5,000 to Canadian men and women for academic and artistic postgraduate study in the UK.

Canadian Student Loans (Canadian students)

The Government of Canada offers Student Loans to full and part-time students who demonstrate financial need in most provinces and territories across Canada.

Chevening Scholarships (All students)

Chevening scholarships are the UK government's global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations.

COLFUTURO (Colombian students)

COLFUTURO’s main objective is to provide financial support and increase the possibilities of Colombian citizens to access high-quality postgraduate study programs abroad.

EDAAD Scholarship Programme (UAE students)

EDAAD scholarship programme is aimed at enhancing the skill level of UAE national talents. It sponsors and encourages them to pursue their education at top-ranked universities worldwide.

Entente Cordiale scholarships (French students)

The Entente Cordiale scholarships are prestigious awards that fund French students who wish to study in the UK, and British students who wish to study in France for one year or postgraduate level. We award a range of scholarships in different disciplines, which gives the scheme a unique diversity.

European Funding Guide (European students)

The European Funding Guide provides a search facility for scholarships and grants for European students.

Federal loans (US students) 

US Federal Loans give US citizens or eligible students the opportunity to travel to the UK and to study. 

FINCAD Women in Finance Scholarship (Female students)

The FINCAD Women in Finance Scholarship is an award of $10,000 USD available to females of any nationality, studying Finance in a graduate-level programme.

Forktip Women’s Innovation Scholarship (Female students)

The Forktip Women’s Innovation Scholarship provides financial support for women around the world to further their education and careers.

Fulbright US Student programme (US students)

The All Disciplines Award can be applied to any master's or doctoral degree at any recognised UK university, as well as for independent research projects.

FUNED (Mexican students)

FUNED offers financial assistance for Mexican students to study full-time master's courses at top universities.

Funds for Women Graduates (Female students)

FfWG awards grants specifically for living expenses to Women, during their postgraduate studies, with the aim of positively impacting their future career and our society as a whole.

Gowrie Scholarship (Australian students)

The Gowrie Scholarship derives from a fund that was set up in 1943 to maintain scholarships in perpetual memory of those Australian men and women who gave their lives for their country in the Second World War. Scholarships are available for all fields of study.

Grammarist (All students)

Scholarship Programme is open to individuals of all nationalities who are currently undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate study, or secondary school students  at an officially-recognized higher learning institution anywhere around the world. The only criterion is that the studying is conducted in the English language.

Heinrich Böll Foundation (All students)

Grants scholarships to undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students from inside and outside Germany.

John Monash Scholarships (Australian students)

Scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding Australian graduates to support them with post graduate study at the world’s best universities.

JN Tata Endowment (Indian students)

The J. N. Tata Endowment awards a one-time loan scholarship only at the beginning of the course to Indian nationals for full time Postgraduate/Ph.D./Postdoctoral studies abroad.

Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship (Singapore students)

Lee Kuan Yew Scholarships are awarded to Singaporean citizens studying a postgraduate course to develop their potential as leaders in their field.

Magdalena O Vda de Brockmann (Mexican students)

Magdalena O Vda de Brockmann provides scholarships for Mexican students to study one-year master's courses in the UK.

Marshall Scholarships (US students)
Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.

MastersCompare Postgraduate Scholarship (All students)

Postgraduate Scholarship worth £5,000.

Mexican Embassy (Mexican students)

The Mexican Embassy publishes information on scholarships open to Mexican students

Postgrad Solutions Study Bursaries (All students)

Postgrad Solutions Study Bursary offers bursaries worth £500 and they are open to students from anywhere in the world. 

Professional and Career Development Loans (UK domicile students)

Professional and Career Development Loans are bank loans to pay for courses and training that help with your career or help get you into work.

Qalaa Holdings Scholarship Foundation (Egyptian students)

The Qalaa Holdings Scholarship Foundation was created in 2007, out of a strong will to contribute to national development through creating high calibre professionals to help enhance Egypt's growth in all sectors.

Roberta Sykes Scholarship (Australian students) 

The Roberta Sykes Scholarship provides partial funding to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander postgraduate students who wish to undertake studies at recognised overseas universities.

Singapore Ministry of Defence (Singapore students)

The Singapore Ministry of Defence offers several scholarships for Singaporean students who wish to enter the military upon graduation.

Single Parent Scholarships (All students)

The Custody X Change Giving Fund awards three scholarships to single parents each year.

The Erasmus+ Master Loan (All students)

The Erasmus+ Master Loan is to help Masters students with their living and tuition costs when studying in a country other than where they live or where they took their first degree.

The Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund (Sudanese students)

The purpose of the Fund is to promote educational development in South Sudan and Sudan. Grants are available for educational projects and activities in South Sudan and Sudan and for South Sudanese and Sudanese nationals studying for a postgraduate course in the UK who intend to return to South Sudan or Sudan at the end of their studies.

The Anglo-Danish Society (Danish students)

The Society grants scholarships for the purpose of post-graduate studies or research. Each year awards are made to 6-8 students for study in the other country.

The Anglo-Jewish Association (Jewish students)

The Anglo-Jewish Association is a leading Jewish community organisation which provides financial assistance to Jewish students to attend University and Higher Education throughout the country.

The IELTS Prize (All students)

The IELTS Prize enables students to study any chosen course in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme of a higher institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements.

The Leathersellers’ Company (All students)

Provide Student Grants of up to £4,000 a year. You can apply for up to four years of funding to study for a full-time Degree at any UK University.

The Mackenzie King Scholarships (Canadian students)

Two classes of Mackenzie King Scholarship are available to graduates of Canadian universities: the Open Scholarship and the Travelling Scholarship.

Both are to support graduate study in any discipline.

The MOD's Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (UK students)

The MOD's Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELC) promotes lifelong learning amongst members of the Armed Forces. The scheme provides financial support in the form of a single up-front payment in each of a maximum of three separate financial years.

The Nestpick Scholarship (All students)

Scholarship worth €2.500 each to help cover the cost of housing.

The Sir Ernest Cassel Trust (developing Commonwealth countries)

The Trust provide grants for overseas students from developing Commonwealth countries, who are in their final year at a university in the United Kingdom and who are facing un-foreseen financial difficulties.

The Sir Richard Stapley Educational Trust (All students) 

Open to students from all countries, applicants must be resident in the UK at the time of applying, as well as during their course of study.

UK Government funding

Student Finance England (English domicile students)

Student Finance England is providing postgraduate loans for English domiciled students starting a master's level course at any UK university. 

Student Finance Wales (Welsh domicile students)

The Welsh Government fund postgraduate courses that lead to a qualification in a Master’s degree.

The Scottish Government (Scottish domicile students)

The Scottish Government has confirmed plans for a Scottish loan scheme in 2018/19. Scottish students are likely to be able to borrow up to £10,000 (to be confirmed), but only those studying at a Scottish university will be eligible.

Northern Irish Department for the Economy (Irish domicile students)

The Northern Irish Department for the Economy has announced that loans of up to £5,500 are likely to be available to Northern Irish domiciled students who wish to study postgraduate courses (up to master's level) at a UK university.
